upāṃśu-krīḍito'mātyaḥ svayaṃ rājāyate yataḥ | avajñā kriyate tena sadā paricayāddhruvam ||

A minister who was one's private playmate soon acts as if he were king himself; out of familiarity he always treats his master with disrespect.

Meaning today and context

Familiarity can breed contempt. Putting a close old friend in a formal role can blur the line between friendship and responsibility; it helps to set clear expectations at the start.

In the story of the lion Piṅgalaka and the bull Sañjīvaka, Piṅgalaka's brother Stabdhakarṇa advises him on whom to put in charge of the treasury: a boyhood companion made minister soon forgets his place.
