Hitopadesha 2.110

2.110 Narayana

svarṇa-rekhāmahaṃ spṛṣṭvā baddhvātmānaṃ ca dūtikā | āditsuśca maṇiṃ sādhuḥ sva-doṣādduḥkhitā ime ||

I touched Svarṇarekhā, the go-between bound herself, and the holy man wanted to take the jewel: all these came to grief through their own fault.

Meaning today and context

Some troubles are of our own making. Seeing that clearly, without endless complaint, is the first step to setting things right.

After Piṅgalaka and Sañjīvaka become inseparable and the jackals are left without food, Damanaka tells Karaṭaka that the fault is their own, since they brought the bull to the lion; he then tells the tale behind this verse.
