Hitopadesha 2.127

2.127 Narayana

atyucchrite mantriṇi pārthive ca | viṣṭabhya pādāvupatiṣṭhate śrīḥ | sā strī-svabhāvādasahā bharasya | tayordvayorekataraṃ jahāti ||

When minister and king have both risen too high, Fortune stands between them with her feet braced; unable, by a woman's nature, to bear the weight, she lets go of one of the two.

The 'woman's nature' image reflects the attitudes of its time and is not this app's view. In the story Damanaka says this to poison a friendship with lies. Before acting on suspicion of anyone, check the facts yourself (see HP 2.143–144).

Meaning today and context

When two people at the top both hold full power, the arrangement rarely lasts; one of them usually falls. Clear roles and limits prevent that rivalry.

Damanaka goes to the lion Piṅgalaka to turn him against his friend the bull Sañjīvaka; he tells the lion that raising one minister above all others was the mistake.
