Hitopadesha 2.129

2.129 Narayana

viṣa-dagdhasya bhaktasya dantasya calitasya ca | amātyasya ca duṣṭasya mūlāduddharaṇaṃ sukham ||

Food mixed with poison, a loose tooth and a wicked minister: relief comes only from removing them by the root.

Not a licence for violence or revenge; in the story the accusation is false. In the story Damanaka says this to poison a friendship with lies. Before acting on suspicion of anyone, check the facts yourself (see HP 2.143–144). Not medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Some problems cannot be managed halfway; a harmful arrangement has to be ended cleanly. That means firm, fair action after the facts are clear, not harm to anyone.

Damanaka goes to the lion Piṅgalaka to turn him against his friend the bull Sañjīvaka; he urges removing a corrupt minister completely.
