Hitopadesha 2.139

2.139 Narayana

vardhanaṃ vātha sammānaṃ khalānāṃ prītaye kutaḥ | phalantyamṛta-seke'pi na pathyāni viṣa-drumāḥ ||

How could advancement or honour make the wicked friendly? Poison trees do not bear wholesome fruit even when watered with nectar.

In the story Damanaka says this to poison a friendship with lies. Before acting on suspicion of anyone, check the facts yourself (see HP 2.143–144).

Meaning today and context

Promotions and praise do not buy the loyalty of someone whose intentions are bad. Choose whom you advance by character, not in the hope of winning them over.

Damanaka continues: kindness to the wicked does not win them over.
