majjannapi payorāśau labdhvā sarpāvalambanam | na muñcati na cādatte tathā mugdho'smi samprati ||

Like a man drowning in the ocean who finds a snake to cling to, and can neither let go nor hold on: so bewildered am I now.

Meaning today and context

Some choices feel like this: both holding on and letting go seem dangerous. Naming the dilemma honestly, and getting trusted advice, is the first step out. (In the story, though, Damanaka is only acting.)
