Hitopadesha 2.179

2.179 Narayana

dharmārtha-kāma-tattvajño naikānta-karuṇo bhavet | nahi hastasthamapyannaṃ kṣamāvānbhakṣituṃ kṣamaḥ ||

One who knows the truth of dharma, artha and kāma should not be wholly given to compassion: a man who forgives everything cannot even eat the food in his own hand.

Spoken by a schemer to justify a killing. Not a licence for harshness, revenge or violence.

Meaning today and context

Kindness needs judgment: a leader or parent who never sets limits or consequences can be exploited and cannot protect anyone. Still, in the story this is Damanaka's excuse for cruelty.

In the story of the lion Piṅgalaka and the bull Sañjīvaka, Damanaka continues to argue to Piṅgalaka that a ruler cannot afford unlimited pity.
