Hitopadesha 2.182

2.182 Narayana

rājā ghṛṇī brāhmaṇaḥ sarva-bhakṣī | strī cāvajñā duṣprakṛtiḥ sahāyaḥ | preṣyaḥ pratīpo'dhikṛtaḥ pramādī | tyājyā ime yaśca kṛtaṃ na vetti ||

A king squeamish about punishment, a brāhmaṇa who eats anything, a disrespectful wife, a companion of bad nature, a defiant servant, a careless official, and one who does not acknowledge what was done for him: these are to be given up.

The wife and brāhmaṇa lines reflect the norms of their time: judge by conduct, never birth, and never use this to control or demean women. Not advice to abandon family; for abuse at home, 181 / 112.

Meaning today and context

Each role carries a duty; when someone consistently fails theirs (a leader who won't act, a partner who doesn't respect, an associate with bad intent, a negligent official, an ungrateful person), the relationship may need to change. The ungrateful especially are a poor investment.
