Hitopadesha 2.27

2.27 Narayana

praṇamatyunnati-hetorjīvita-hetorvimuñcati prāṇān | duḥkhīyati sukha-hetoḥ ko mūḍhaḥ sevakādanyaḥ ||

He bows down in order to rise, gives up his life in order to live, suffers in order to be happy: who is a greater fool than a servant?

Meaning today and context

Karaṭaka points to the paradox of a career spent sacrificing the very things it is meant to secure. If you are giving up health and happiness now for a future that keeps receding, it is worth stepping back.

The jackal Karaṭaka sums up his complaint about serving a king.
