Hitopadesha 2.3

2.3 Narayana

brahmahāpi naraḥ pūjyo yasyāsti vipulaṃ dhanam | śaśinastulya-vaṃśo'pi nirdhanaḥ paribhūyate ||

Even a man who has killed a brāhmaṇa is honoured if he has great wealth; one without money is despised even if his lineage equals the moon's.

A cynical observation about society, not approval of it: wealth does not make wrongdoing acceptable, and poverty is no measure of a person's worth. If feeling looked down on has left you in despair, talk to someone; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

This is an observation about how society behaves, not a judgment of right and wrong: money buys respect, even for the wrong people, and poverty brings contempt, even for the good. Seeing it plainly can keep you from mistaking wealth for worth, in others and in yourself.

The narrator continues the merchant Vardhamāna's reasoning for seeking more wealth, with a cynical observation about how the world treats the rich and the poor.
