2.31 Narayana

parādhikāra-carcā yaḥ kuryātsvāmi-hitecchayā | sa viṣīdati cītkārādgardabhastāḍito yathā ||

He who takes up another's duty, wishing to serve his master's good, comes to grief, like the donkey beaten for braying.

Meaning today and context

Doing someone else's job, even with good intentions, often backfires: it is not welcomed, it is done badly, and you pay for it. Do your own work well and let others answer for theirs.

When Damanaka insists a servant must watch his master's moods, Karaṭaka says that is the chief minister's job and tells the story of the donkey who brayed to do the watchdog's job and was beaten to death by the washerman.
