udīrito'rthaḥ paśunāpi gṛhyate hayāśca nāgāśca vahanti coditāḥ | anuktamapyūhati paṇḍito janaḥ pareṅgita-jñāna-phalā hi buddhayaḥ ||

A meaning spoken aloud is grasped even by an animal; horses and elephants carry their loads when they are urged. But a wise person works out even what is left unsaid, for the fruit of intelligence is reading the signs of others.

Meaning today and context

Following clear instructions is the minimum; real understanding shows in noticing what people feel but do not say. A good colleague, friend or parent picks up on the silence, the tension, the worry behind the words.

In the story of the lion Piṅgalaka and the bull Sañjīvaka, the jackal Damanaka has noticed that his master the lion is sitting startled and turned about for some reason; the two jackals talk about how a sharp mind reads what is not said.
