2.51 Narayana

prastāva-sadṛśaṃ vākyaṃ sad-bhāva-sadṛśaṃ priyam | ātma-śakti-samaṃ kopaṃ yo jānāti sa paṇḍitaḥ ||

Whoever knows how to speak words that fit the occasion, kindness that fits the other's true feeling, and anger that matches his own strength, he is wise.

Meaning today and context

Wisdom is a sense of proportion: saying what the moment needs, returning warmth in the measure it is offered, and never getting angrier than you can stand behind. Anger beyond your power to act only harms you.

Damanaka tells Karaṭaka that he will use this moment of the lion's fear to win the master over by his wits, and gives this definition of a wise person.
