Hitopadesha 2.54

2.54 Narayana

yasya yasya hi yo bhāvastena tena hi taṃ naram | anupraviśya medhāvī kṣipramātma-vaśaṃ nayet ||

Whatever a person's disposition, a clever one enters into that very disposition and quickly brings him under his control.

Spoken by the scheming jackal of the story. Understanding others is good; using it to control or manipulate them is not endorsed.

Meaning today and context

It is true that people respond when you meet them on their own terms, and that is worth knowing for honest communication. But Damanaka uses it to manipulate, and the book shows where that leads; watch for flatterers who mirror you to steer you.

Damanaka, the scheming jackal, continues explaining how he means to win the lion over.
