Hitopadesha 2.58

2.58 Narayana

āsannameva nṛpatirbhajate manuṣyaṃ vidyā-vihīnamakulīnamasaṃstutaṃ vā | prāyeṇa bhūmi-patayaḥ pramadā-latāśca yaḥ pārśvato vasati taṃ pariveṣṭayanti ||

A king favours whoever is near him, even a man without learning, of low family, or unknown. As a rule, kings, women and creepers wind themselves around whoever lives beside them.

The comparison of women to creepers reflects the prejudices of its time and is not this app's view; it must never be used to demean, distrust or control women. 'Low family' is judged by conduct, never by birth.

Meaning today and context

The verse makes a cynical point about how proximity, not merit, often wins favour with those in power. Its comparison of women to clinging creepers reflects the prejudice of its time.

Damanaka argues that being close to the master is what counts, with a cynical comparison of kings, women and creepers.
