One should seek to gain what is not yet gained, guard with care what is gained, increase what is guarded, and bestow what has increased on worthy recipients.

A general principle, not financial advice; consult a qualified adviser for investment decisions.

Meaning today and context

A simple order for handling money: earn, protect, grow, and then share it well. Each step needs its own care, and the last step, giving to those who deserve it, is what gives the earlier ones their purpose.

The merchant Vardhamāna's reasoning continues with the classic four-step rule for wealth; the prose adds that wealth not guarded is lost and wealth not grown is slowly used up.
