Hitopadesha 2.92

2.92 Narayana

That minister is always best who would increase the treasury by even a kākiṇī, the smallest coin. For one who has a treasury, the treasury is his life; a king's life-breaths are not his life.

General wisdom about prudence, not financial advice; a person's life matters more than money.

Meaning today and context

Any organisation runs on its finances; the person who guards and grows them carefully, even by small amounts, is worth more than a flashy one. For a family too, steady savings are a lifeline.

Sañjīvaka continues on the value of a careful treasurer.
