Meaning today and context

Gratitude is good, but repaying a favour with a position of control can backfire: the person may treat the old favour as a licence. Thank people in other ways, and keep responsibility tied to accountability.

In the story of the lion Piṅgalaka and the bull Sañjīvaka, Piṅgalaka's brother Stabdhakarṇa advises him on whom to put in charge of the treasury: someone who once did you a favour makes a risky official.
