kratau vivāhe vyasane ripu-kṣaye | yaśaskare karmaṇi mitra-saṅgrahe | priyāsu nārīṣvadhaneṣu bāndhaveṣv | ativyayo nāsti narādhipāṣṭasu ||

At a sacrifice, a wedding, in calamity, in destroying enemies, in a deed that brings fame, in winning friends, on beloved women and on poor relatives: in these eight, O king, there is no such thing as overspending.

About when spending is worth it; not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

Some spending is an investment in people and meaning: helping in a crisis, supporting poor relatives, keeping friendships, marking life's big moments. Being stingy there costs more than it saves.

In Book 3 (Vigraha), as the peacock king Citravarṇa prepares to besiege the fort, the swan king's council argues that this is the moment to spend freely on rewarding the troops.
