In this world, fragile as the play of waves tossed by the wind, it is only by merit that one comes to spend one's life for the sake of others.

Praise of dying in battle or for a master belongs to the warrior ethic of its time; it is never a reason to seek death, harm anyone, or accept danger at work. If you are thinking of ending your life, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Life is as passing as a wave. To be able to spend it on others is a blessing, which today means service, care and generosity, not dying.

In Book 3 (Vigraha), the crane general Sārasa refuses to abandon the trapped swan king Hiraṇyagarbha and explains why he will stand and fight.
