Never stay with a wicked person, nor travel with one: through the crow's company the swan was killed while staying, and the quail while going.
Meaning today and context
The swan and the quail did nothing wrong; they were simply beside the culprit when consequences came. Bad company can cost you even if your own hands are clean.
The parrot adds this maxim and tells two fables: a swan shading a sleeping traveller was shot when the crow beside it fouled the man's face, and a quail travelling with a crow was killed for the crow's theft of curd.
