As many as the hairs on a human body, three and a half crore, so many years does she dwell in heaven who follows her husband [in death].
This verse glorifies sati (a widow dying on her husband's pyre), which is a crime and a grave wrong; here a deceiving character says it in a fable. It must never be read as praise of dying after a loss. If you or someone you know is thinking of ending their life, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

This is the old glorification of sati, put by the fable into the mouth of a liar. It has no place as counsel; every life, including a widow's, is to be lived and protected.
In the story of the cuckolded chariot-maker, told by the parrot, the unfaithful wife, knowing her husband is hiding under the bed, recites this to her lover to fool him; she says she has vowed to die with him when he dies.
