Hitopadesha 3.31

3.31 Narayana

citau pariṣvajya vicetanaṃ patiṃ | priyā hi yā muñcati dehamātmanaḥ | kṛtvāpi pāpaṃ śata-lakṣamapyasau | patiṃ gṛhītvā sura-lokamāpnuyāt ||

The beloved wife who, embracing her lifeless husband on the pyre, gives up her own body, even if she has committed a hundred lakh sins, takes her husband with her and reaches the world of the gods.

This verse glorifies sati (a widow dying on her husband's pyre), which is a crime and a grave wrong; here a deceiving character says it in a fable. It must never be read as praise of dying after a loss. If you or someone you know is thinking of ending their life, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The fullest statement of the sati ideal in the passage, and in the fable it is pure pretence by an unfaithful wife. It must be read only as a record of a harmful past belief.

In the story of the cuckolded chariot-maker, told by the parrot, the unfaithful wife, knowing her husband is hiding under the bed, recites this to her lover to fool him; she ends her praise of sati.
