Hitopadesha 3.70

3.70 Narayana

kiṃ mantreṇānanuṣṭhāne śāstravitpṛthivī-pateḥ | na hyauṣadha-parijñānādvyādheḥ śāntiḥ kvacidbhavet ||

O king who knows the śāstras, what use is counsel if it is not carried out? Merely knowing the medicine never cures the illness.

The medicine image is a metaphor; it is not medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Plans, advice and knowledge change nothing until you act on them. Reading about the cure is not taking it.

King Citravarṇa asks his minister not to dampen his zeal but to tell him how to invade; the vulture Dūradarśin agrees, warning that advice bears fruit only when it is carried out.
