4.26 Narayana

jñāna-śreṣṭho dvijaḥ pūjyaḥ kṣatriyo balavānapi | dhana-dhānyādhiko vaiśyaḥ śūdrastu dvija-sevayā ||

A twice-born is honoured as foremost in knowledge, a kṣatriya for his strength, a vaiśya for his wealth and grain, and a śūdra for serving the twice-born.

Varṇa here is to be read as role and conduct, never as birth-based caste; this verse must never be used to rank or exclude anyone.

In the story this is the trick by which the god turns the brothers' pride against them. As a statement of social order it reflects its time; today worth comes from knowledge, effort and conduct, open to everyone.

In the tale of Sunda and Upasunda: the two demon brothers, granted Pārvatī by Śiva, quarrel over her and ask an old brahmin (Śiva in disguise) to judge. He answers with this verse and tells them that, as warriors, their way is to fight; they kill each other.
