Hitopadesha 4.5

4.5 Narayana

rakṣitavyaṃ sadā vākyaṃ vākyādbhavati nāśanam | haṃsābhyāṃ nīyamānasya kūrmasya patanaṃ yathā ||

Speech must always be guarded; ruin comes from speech, as the tortoise being carried by the two swans fell.

Meaning today and context

The tortoise had a safe way out and lost it to one angry retort. When people provoke or mock you, the urge to answer back can cost you more than the insult ever could; sometimes the wisest thing is to keep your mouth shut.

The minister adds a second line on the same tale: the tortoise, carried through the air on a stick held by two swans, opened his mouth to answer the jeers of onlookers and fell.
