Hitopadesha 4.54

4.54 Narayana

yā hi prāṇa-parityāga-mūlyenāpi na labhyate | sā śrīrnītividaṃ paśya cañcalāpi pradhāvati ||

See: that fortune which cannot be won even at the price of one's life, that same fickle fortune runs after those who know policy.

Meaning today and context

Success often comes less from desperate sacrifice than from thinking clearly: planning, knowing your means, and choosing the right approach.

The minister Sarvajña goes on, listing the six measures of policy, the five parts of counsel, the four means and the three powers, and says great rulers weigh all of these.
