mattaḥ pramattaśconmattaḥ śrāntaḥ kruddho bubhukṣitaḥ | lubdho bhīrustvarā-yuktaḥ kāmukaśca na dharma-vit ||
The drunk, the careless, the deranged, the exhausted, the angry, the hungry, the greedy, the fearful, the one in a hurry and the lustful: these do not know dharma.
Meaning today and context
When you are drunk, exhausted, angry, hungry, afraid or rushed, your sense of right and wrong goes blurry. Don't make big decisions in those states, and don't expect others to judge well in them.
In the same tale the crow adds a maxim to show that a starving master will not keep to dharma.
