4.68 Narayana

kroḍīkaroti prathamaṃ yadā jātamanityatā | dhātrīva jananī paścāttadā śokasya kaḥ kramaḥ ||

When a child is born, impermanence takes it into her lap first, like a nurse, and only afterwards the mother: so what place is there for grief?

If you are grieving, your sorrow is real and mourning is natural; Kapila's reminders of impermanence are meant to steady, not to dismiss the loss. If grief feels unbearable or you think of ending your life, reach out to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Every life is held by impermanence from its first moment; that is not a reason to love less, but it can soften the shock that loss is possible at all.

At Kauṇḍinya's house, a learned graduate named Kapila tells the weeping father he is foolish to lament so, and begins to console him.
