Hitopadesha 4.69

4.69 Narayana

kva gatāḥ pṛthivī-pālāḥ sa-sainya-bala-vāhanāḥ | viyoga-sākṣiṇī yeṣāṃ bhūmiradyāpi tiṣṭhati ||

Where have the rulers of the earth gone, with their armies, strength and chariots? The earth, which witnessed their passing, still stands today.

If you are grieving, your sorrow is real and mourning is natural; Kapila's reminders of impermanence are meant to steady, not to dismiss the loss. If grief feels unbearable or you think of ending your life, reach out to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Even the mightiest pass; the world goes on. In grief this can be a quiet comfort: loss comes to everyone, and you are not singled out.

Kapila continues consoling the grieving father Kauṇḍinya.
