Hitopadesha 4.77

4.77 Narayana

pañcabhirnirmite dehe pañcatvaṃ ca punargate | svāṃ svāṃ yonimanuprāpte tatra kā paridevanā ||

The body is made of the five elements; when it returns to the five again, each part going back to its own source, what is there to lament?

If you are grieving, your sorrow is real and mourning is natural; Kapila's reminders of impermanence are meant to steady, not to dismiss the loss. If grief feels unbearable or you think of ending your life, reach out to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The body comes from nature and returns to it. This can bring some peace about what happens to a body after death, while the love and loss we feel remain real.

Kapila continues consoling the brahmin Kauṇḍinya, whose son Suśīla has died of snakebite.
