Hitopadesha 4.93

4.93 Narayana

ātmā nadī saṃyamapuṇya-tīrthā | satyodakā śīla-taṭā dayormiḥ | tatrābhiṣekaṃ kuru pāṇḍu-putra ! | na vāriṇā śudhyati cāntarātmā ||

The self is a river whose holy bathing-place is self-restraint, whose water is truth, whose banks are good conduct and whose waves are compassion. Bathe there, son of Pāṇḍu; the inner self is not made pure by water.

Meaning today and context

Pilgrimages and ritual baths don't clean the heart; restraint, truthfulness, good conduct and compassion do. Real purity is in how we live.

Kapila continues, quoting a verse spoken to a son of Pāṇḍu, that true purity is inward.
