The Upanishad begins by calling self-knowledge the ground on which every other kind of knowing stands, and by showing it as something handed on from teacher to student.
The opening of the Mundaka Upanishad (Mundaka 1.1.1), in the narrator's voice: it traces the knowledge of Brahman back to Brahmā, the first of the gods.
