tapasā cīyate brahma tato'nnamabhijāyate | annātprāṇo manaḥ satyaṃ lokāḥ karmasu cāmṛtam ||
Through tapas Brahman swells; from it food is born; from food, the life-breath, the mind, the real (the elements), the worlds, and, in actions, the deathless (their lasting fruit).
Meaning today and context
The verse sees all of life as one chain: from the source come food, breath, mind and the world we act in. Our thoughts and actions belong to that same chain, not outside it.
Aṅgiras sketches the order of creation (Mundaka 1.1.8): Brahman expands through its own brooding power (tapas), and from it come food, life-breath, mind, the elements, the worlds, and the lasting results of action.
