Mundaka Upanishad 1.2.10

1.2.10 Angiras to Shaunaka

iṣṭāpūrtaṃ manyamānā variṣṭhaṃ nānyacchreyo vedayante pramūḍhāḥ | nākasya pṛṣṭhe te sukṛte'nubhūtvemaṃ lokaṃ hīnataraṃ vā viśanti ||

Thinking sacrifices and works of public charity to be the best, the deluded know no higher good. Having enjoyed the heights of heaven won by good deeds, they enter this world again, or a lower one.

This verse is not a reason to stop helping others or giving to charity; it says good works alone do not bring liberation.

Meaning today and context

Doing good is worth doing, but if it is done mainly to earn a reward, the reward is all it brings, and rewards end. The verse asks what we are ultimately seeking beyond merit and recognition.

Aṅgiras on those who think sacrifice and charitable works are the highest good (Mundaka 1.2.10): heaven earned that way ends, and they return.
