tasmācca devā bahudhā saṃprasūtāḥ sādhyā manuṣyāḥ paśavo vayāṃsi | prāṇāpānau vrīhiyavau tapaśca śraddhā satyaṃ brahmacaryaṃ vidhiśca ||
From him the gods were born in many ways, the Sādhyas, humans, cattle and birds, the in-breath and out-breath, rice and barley, and austerity, faith, truth, chastity and the rule of right conduct.
Brahmacarya here is one item in a list of virtues; it is not a demand for celibacy or self-denial for a householder.
Meaning today and context
Virtues like faith, truthfulness and self-restraint are listed alongside rice and barley: they are as much a part of the natural order as food, and as nourishing.
Aṅgiras continues the list (Mundaka 2.1.7): gods, humans, animals, breath, grain, and the virtues of austerity, faith, truth and self-restraint all come from the Person.
