Mundaka Upanishad 3.1.9

3.1.9 Angiras to Shaunaka

eṣo'ṇurātmā cetasā veditavyo yasminprāṇaḥ pañcadhā saṃviveśa | prāṇaiścittaṃ sarvamotaṃ prajānāṃ yasminviśuddhe vibhavatyeṣa ātmā ||

This subtle Self is to be known by the mind, the Self in which breath has entered in five ways. The whole mind of creatures is woven through with the senses; when that is purified, this Self shines forth.

The fivefold breath is part of the Upanishad's account of the person, not a breathing exercise or medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Our mind is usually tangled up with the senses and their pulls. As it becomes clearer and less agitated, what we truly are can be noticed more easily.

Mundaka 3.1.9. Angiras: this subtle Self, into which breath has entered fivefold, is to be known by the mind; the whole mind of creatures is woven with the senses, and when it is purified the Self shines forth.
