12.168.10 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

kiṃ nu khalvasi mūḍhastvaṃ śocyaḥ kimanuśocasi | yadā tvāmapi śocantaḥ śocyā yāsyanti tāṃ gatim ||

Why are you so bewildered? You are yourself to be mourned; whom do you mourn? Those who will one day mourn you will also go that same way.

For someone freshly bereaved, acknowledge the loss first; the verse does not forbid mourning or love. If grief feels unbearable or you think of harming yourself, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Grief often forgets that we too are passing. Remembering that everyone shares the same end can soften grief into compassion, for others and for ourselves.

Mahabharata 12.168.10: In Bhishma's story, the brahmin asks the grieving King Senajit why he mourns, when he himself is mortal and those who will mourn him will go the same way.
