12.168.13 A brahmin to Senajit

paśya bhūtāni duḥkhena vyatiṣaktāni sarvaśaḥ | ātmāpi cāyaṃ na mama sarvā vā pṛthivī mama ||

Look: all beings everywhere are entwined with sorrow. Even this body is not mine, nor is the whole earth mine.

'This body is not mine' is about loosening possessiveness, not neglecting your health or self-worth. If you feel your life doesn't matter, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Much of our pain comes from the sense of 'mine'. Holding even our own body more lightly, as something on loan, frees us from some of that weight.

Mahabharata 12.168.13: The brahmin answers Senajit: all beings are bound up with sorrow, and he sees that neither his own body nor the whole earth is his.
