12.168.16 A brahmin to Senajit

evaṃ putrāśca pautrāśca jñātayo bāndhavāstathā | teṣu sneho na kartavyo viprayogo hi tairdhruvam ||

So it is with sons and grandsons, kinsmen and relatives. One should not make clinging attachment to them, for separation from them is certain.

This does not mean withholding love or care from family. Sneha here is clinging attachment; caring for and loving your people is right. For fresh grief, acknowledge the loss first; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The point is not to stop loving our family but to love without clinging, knowing that parting will come. Love that does not cling grieves, but is not destroyed.

Mahabharata 12.168.16: The brahmin applies the image: sons, grandsons, kin and friends will surely be parted from us, so one should not bind oneself to them by clinging.
