12.168.18 A brahmin to Senajit

tṛṣṇārtiprabhavaṃ duḥkhaṃ duḥkhārtiprabhavaṃ sukham | sukhātsaṃjāyate duḥkhamevametatpunaḥ punaḥ | sukhasyānantaraṃ duḥkhaṃ duḥkhasyānantaraṃ sukham ||

Sorrow is born of the ache of craving; pleasure is born of relief from the ache of sorrow. From pleasure, sorrow arises again; so it goes, again and again. After pleasure comes sorrow, after sorrow comes pleasure.

Meaning today and context

Pleasure and pain chase each other like day and night. Seeing the role craving plays in this loop is the first step to stepping out of it.

Mahabharata 12.168.18: The brahmin explains to Senajit the cycle: sorrow springs from craving, pleasure from relief of sorrow, and they follow each other again and again.
