12.168.23 A brahmin to Senajit

dhenurvatsasya gopasya svāminastaskarasya ca | payaḥ pibati yastasyā dhenustasyeti niścayaḥ ||

The cow belongs to the calf, the cowherd, the owner and the thief alike; whoever drinks her milk, the cow is his: that is the settled truth.

Meaning today and context

Ownership is looser than we think: what we call 'mine' is really whatever we happen to enjoy for now. Holding possessions this way makes loss easier to bear.

Mahabharata 12.168.23: The brahmin gives an illustration: whoever drinks a cow's milk, calf, cowherd, owner or thief, for him the cow is his.
