12.168.27 A brahmin to Senajit

atha ye buddhimaprāptā vyatikrāntāśca mūḍhatām | te'tivelaṃ prahṛṣyanti saṃtāpamupayānti ca ||

Those who have not attained understanding, yet have passed beyond mere foolishness, rejoice beyond measure and then fall into anguish.

Meaning today and context

Big highs and big lows go together. If our moods swing hard with every event, that is a sign to deepen our understanding, not to chase the next high.

Mahabharata 12.168.27: The brahmin describes those in between: they have not reached understanding but have passed beyond sheer foolishness, so they rejoice too much and then suffer.
