12.168.28 A brahmin to Senajit

nityapramuditā mūḍhā divi devagaṇā iva | avalepena mahatā paridṛbdhā vicetasaḥ ||

The foolish are always delighted, like hosts of gods in heaven, bound up in great conceit, without true awareness.

This contrasts kinds of happiness; it is not a licence to call cheerful or simple people fools or look down on anyone.

Meaning today and context

A constant, unthinking cheerfulness built on pride is not the same as peace. Real calm comes with awareness, not by refusing to see.

Mahabharata 12.168.28: The brahmin describes the foolish: always delighted like gods in heaven, wrapped in great conceit and without discernment.
