12.168.29 A brahmin to Senajit

sukhaṃ duḥkhāntamālasyaṃ duḥkhaṃ dākṣyaṃ sukhodayam | bhūtiścaiva śriyā sārdhaṃ dakṣe vasati nālase ||

Idleness is a pleasure that ends in sorrow; diligence is a hardship that rises into happiness. Prosperity and fortune dwell with the diligent, not with the idle.

Meaning today and context

Putting things off feels good now and hurts later; steady, skilful effort is hard now and pays back later. This holds for studies, work and health alike.
