12.168.34 A brahmin to Senajit

yannimittaṃ bhavecchokastrāso vā duḥkhameva vā | āyāso vā yatomūlastadekāṅgamapi tyajet ||

Whatever becomes the cause of grief, fear or sorrow, whatever is the root of strain, one should give it up, even if it were a limb of one's own body.

'Even a limb' is a figure of speech for letting go of what causes suffering; it is never a suggestion to harm your body. If you have thoughts of self-harm, call Tele-MANAS 14416. It is also not advice to abandon people who depend on you.

Meaning today and context

Some habits, ambitions or entanglements cost us far more peace than they give. It takes courage to let go of something that feels like part of us, but freedom often lies there.

Mahabharata 12.168.34: The brahmin advises giving up whatever is the cause or root of grief, fear, sorrow or strain, even if it were a part of oneself.
