12.168.35 A brahmin to Senajit

yadyattyajati kāmānāṃ tatsukhasyābhipūryate | kāmānusārī puruṣaḥ kāmānanu vinaśyati ||

Whatever desire one gives up, by that much one's happiness is filled. The person who runs after desires is ruined following them.

Meaning today and context

Contentment does not come from getting more but from wanting less. Each craving we drop leaves us a little lighter and more at peace.

Mahabharata 12.168.35: The brahmin says whatever desire one gives up, by that much one's happiness becomes full; the person who runs after desires perishes following them.
