12.168.36 A brahmin to Senajit

yacca kāmasukhaṃ loke yacca divyaṃ mahatsukham | tṛṣṇākṣayasukhasyaite nārhataḥ ṣoḍaśīṃ kalām ||

Whatever pleasure of desire there is in this world, and whatever great joy there is in heaven, these are not worth a sixteenth part of the happiness that comes when craving is exhausted.

Meaning today and context

The relief of no longer needing something is a deeper happiness than any pleasure we could get. Anyone who has broken free of a craving knows this.

Mahabharata 12.168.36: The brahmin says all the pleasure of desires in this world and even the great joys of heaven are not worth a sixteenth part of the happiness of craving's end.
