12.168.4 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

yathā yathā ca paryeti lokatantramasāravat | tathā tathā virāgo'tra jāyate nātra saṃśayaḥ ||

The more one sees the workings of the world as having no lasting substance, the more dispassion toward it is born; of this there is no doubt.

Meaning today and context

Dispassion is not forced; it grows by itself as we honestly see how little the world's rewards really hold. Seeing clearly loosens the grip.

Mahabharata 12.168.4: Bhishma says that the more clearly one sees the workings of the world as without essence, the more dispassion arises.
