12.168.40 A brahmin to Senajit

yadā saṃharate kāmānkūrmo'ṅgānīva sarvaśaḥ | tadātmajyotirātmā ca ātmanyeva prasīdati ||

When one draws in all desires on every side, as a tortoise draws in its limbs, then the Self, whose light is its own, becomes serene within itself.

Meaning today and context

When we stop reaching outward for every want, the mind becomes clear and settled, like still water. Peace is found by drawing in, not by grabbing more.

Mahabharata 12.168.40: The brahmin gives the image of the tortoise: when a person draws in all desires as a tortoise draws in its limbs, the self-luminous Self grows serene in itself.
